Positive Psychology and St. John's Counselling Service

The books Authentic Happiness by Dr. Martin Seligman, The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt, Making People Happy by Paul Martin, Addiction-Proof Your Child by Stanton Peele, and Changing for Good by Prochaska, Norcross and Diclement have all played a key role with the integration of Positive Psychology's research and scientific principles at St. John's Counselling Service. Whether attempting to reach contentment about our past, emotional and intellectual satisfaction in the present, or optimism about the future, Positive Psychology has been found to be one of the most successful counselling models for a wide range of life's challenges: depression, marital discord, low self-esteem, turbulent teens, substance abuse, anger management, poor communication skills, family-work conflict and other "bumps in the road." Positive Psychology is equally effective in helping us better understand and achieve relationship intimacies, personal and professional happiness, positive attachment with our children and family members, seeing adversity as opportunity, balancing the "I" and "We" activities in life, and enriching love and romance.

Our positive psychology counselling model focuses on: how three key areas in the pleasant, engaged and meaningful life bring us feelings, how the good life and happy life influence our behaviors, and the way our elephant and rider brains control/influence our thinking. Hence, we before we can understand that (those things in life that make us stuck or unpleasant), we must first understand this (who we are and how our thinking influences the way we feel and act). Be curious about yourself and invest some time in learning more about how exploring the self thru positive psychology, no matter how old or young, sad or happy, busy or not you are, can increase your chances of living the happy life.

Humor and Happiness

Tom Nansbury once said, "An optimist laughs to forget; a pessimist forgets to laugh." The Greeks have been credited for the first recorded humor (Greek tragedy play) in 6th century B.C. Since then we have discovered the value of humor and laughter from medicine ("laughter is the best form of medicine") to humbleness ("learn to laugh at yourself) to other key areas in life.
