Anatomy of a Healthy Company
1. Commitment to development of learning and self-knowledge;

2. Workplace values of respect and tolerance;

3. Respect differences, learn from mistakes;

4. Spirit of partnership;

5. High priority for health and well-being (policies, benefits);

6. Appreciation for flexibility and resilience;

7. Passion for quality and excellence.

A healthy company is immediately noticeable. Employees "bounce" into work, they are interested in their jobs, they speak in the first person rather than the third person ("my responsibility" or "our job" rather than "their fault"), and they go home feeling good about themselves and their accomplishments.

Fast Facts Happiness and Work

1. Being happy or happiness (intellectual satisfaction and positive emotions) is much more a product of psychological wealth than material wealth.

2. Governments still focus on economic growth, believing the pursuit of wealth creates happiness but in fact "chasing fame and fortune" increases stress, anxiety and depression. What governments still fail to realize, the more happier we are, the greater the chances for success!

3. Occupational health policies have focused on preventing physical injuries at work, however, very little funding and new programs have been on enhancing a healthy-positive psychosocial work environment since the 1970's.

4. Four (4) types of psychosocial work experience are possible in any type of organization: high-strain, active, low-strain and passive jobs. Each one of these must be understood by the employer and employee to reduce stress and increase a happy workforce.

5. Happy people generally at work are: i) emotionally & intellectually engaged with work, ii) social & emotional competence with others, iii) minimal anxiety, iv) effective communication skills, v) have meaningful activities with their work, vi) have a sense of empowerment/control over their workflow, vii) their work has a sense of purpose and meaning, and viii)  resilient coping skills.
